Gabions are less expensive than concrete and are environmentally friendly. Gabions slow water velocity to retain sediments and allow water to percolate to groundwater. Gabions also conform and flex with heaving and shrinking soils, and tend to self-heal from erosion undermining.

They also look good. Vegetated with vines, trees, or grass, gabions create decorative natural looking erosion control stuctures or walls.
